He was an eternal optimist.” Jussi Toikka The exhibition finds its origin in the words with which Jussi Toikka, son of Oiva Toikka, evokes his father. Throughout his multifaceted career, Oiva Toikka’s (1931–2019) production was characterised by optimistic playfulness. The exhibition is a continuation of the Studio visit Chappe series, in which Chappe invites contemporary artists to explore Albert de la Chapelle’s art collection from different perspectives; by examining the old, something new is created. Through their own expressions, the exhibition’s artists follow the tradition of curiosity that underpinned Oiva Toikka’s work. The artists seek their own path, explore materials, collaborate and take risks. Slate Grove, Helmi Remes, Nooa Hietaniemi, Anu Penttinen, Paula Pääkkönen and Johannes Rantasalo have produced a body of work exclusively for the exhibition, showing how far the possibilities of glass can extend. In their studios, the artists push the boundaries and take traditional glass art outside the cube, for example by using a certain technique, by combining different materials or by working with size or spatiality. It serves as a celebration of Lokal’s core values. The still lifes featured in the exhibition pay tribute to the magical, fleeting nature of the Nordic summer. The collection includes works in various mediums and materials, across diverse scales and subjects, created by Finnish and Finland-based contemporary artists and artisans. Creativity. Color. On the occasion of Milan Design Week 2025, United Colors of Benetton celebrates its special taste for life with ‘Summer Together’, a collaboration with young Finnish artist Paula Pääkkönen. The project is a series of ice cream sculptures, in which the shapes and colors of the summer dessert par excellence meet the shiny and fragile nature of glass, making for an irresistible synesthesia that is one of the areas of glass research pursued by Pääkkönen in her studio together with a team of glass blowers. “Ice cream is most often enjoyed in company, and my fondest memories of summers are those moments of fun, joy and pleasure spent with someone I love,” explains Pääkkönen. ‘Summer Together’ will be on display for a month, starting Saturday, April 12, at the United Colors of Benetton store of Via Vittorio Emanuele, in Milan.
